Medicine Hat is not just a city, but is part of a region, with Medicine Hat being the hub. The total population in October 2005 was 100,496 persons, with approximately 56,000 in Medicine Hat, 5,000 in Redcliff, 16,000 in Brooks and the remainer in small towns and rural areas. Medicine Hat and the surrounding communities are part of the Palliser Regional Health Authority.

There is a rich aboriginal and diverse ethnic population here. Many residents have their roots firmly planted with a long family history in the area. Forty-three percent of the population is over the age of 40 and about 16 percent is 65 and older. Medicine Hat's climate and affordable living make it an excellent choice for retirees.

The economic base of Medicine Hat is agriculture, oil and gas. There is also manufacturing of a variety of industrial and consumer goods. The Canadian Forces Base Suffield is close by. The region has a semi arid climate and the landscape is marked with cattle, pump jacks and the tumbling tumbleweed. The city itself is lush and green, situated on the South Saskatchewan River banks.
